My Life
- Debbie
- What a life I have lived since setting off into the sunset in August of 2008, with my husband, Dave, on our 46 foot Hunter Sailboat. We sailed to the Mainland side of Mexico; Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and many small anchorages in between. We saw unbelievable sea life and scenery. Our adventures took us to the Sea of Cortez for hurricane season in 2009 anchored off the fishing village of Bahia de los Angeles, in Baja California. We fell in love with the village and it's people and got to know a few of the Americans that enjoy living there in the winter. We knew we had found our paradise and looked for a place to live. We found a small house on the sandy beach at the south end of the bay and made it a permanent home. We ended our cruising life to become CLODs and eventually sold Wave Sweeper in May of 2016. Because of my back problems we were unable to make long passages so our cruising had come to an end. Now Wave Sweeper is in good hands with the new owners and they love her. We are living our life and dream as we want and the adventures will only get better.

New Improvements and Sightings
We are in the last month of being in Bahia until laate September; early October. Our grandson Eian graduates from high school on the 14th of June and we want to be there to cheer him on so we will be heading north around the 29th or 30th. Another great thing that is happening is his brother E.J. flies into Seattle on June 10th and will be there for the graduation and a few days afterward. It will be so good to see him. So I am very excited to see the grandboys!!!
On the 3rd we drove to Guerro Negro to go to the bank and use our new debit cards. This time it has the chip in it. We are hoping it works down here. We stopped first at the hardware store to try and find a part for our water jug we keep in the house that 5 gallon water jugs sit on top of. Luckily they had one then we left there and went to the ATM at the bank and headed back home. It is a 2-1/2 hour drive and since it is in another state there is a one hour time change. The ride is rather boring as there is nothing but dessert to look at but that is the closest place to go to get money and some supplies. Our town doesn't have a bank. While we were gone Tito was painting our deck. Here are pictures of the bare deck and then finished.

Eian turned 18 today the 5th Cinco de Mayo. One of our friends had a party and we were invited so we went over there around 3:00pm and had dinner then those who wanted to played either bocce ball or corn hole did so. I chose corn hole as Ernie and Jon played that all the time. Well I suck at the game but the good thing is Dave won 1st place. So yahoo for him. We got a cute set of Mexican made salt and pepper shakers. Everyone had a good time whether they played a game or just sat and watched.

We never know when the propane truck is coming to our area except when someone from Rincon calls on the radio to announce that it is there. So about 3 or 4 hours later we watch for it to come from Rincon (across the bay from us) and onto the flats. This time it was our turn to flag down the truck. I was going to ride the quad out to the road and wait for the truck and lead them into our area, but the wind was blowing up sand like you wouldn't believe so I ended up taking the old truck. We had one tank to fill and then there was one other neighbor that needed propane so we sent them over there. That will be the last time we will need propane until we get back from summer vacation.
My step son Mykel turns 45 today, the 9th. Happy Birthday guy!!!!
For the first time in a long time the tide and weather were conducive to launching the boat and taking it out. So we did just that and I got my first boat ride in it. It was fun and Dave tried to hook a fish but nothing was biting except seaweed. Ha!!! It was such a beautiful afternoon for a ride around the islands. I'm still thinking it would be fun to have a cuddy cab fishing boat to explore the islands and maybe hang on the anchor over night somewhere. Only time will tell.
We have new neighbors in our neighborhood and they are really nice people. They still have to work so they can't come down too often, but they bought a covered trailer and it is a nice piece of property with it that they lease like we do and the best part it is near the beach. So they are happy and we are happy to have them. We are having them over for dinner on the 17th, as they will be leaving on the 20th.
We had a nice dinner with Sandy and Tom and are getting to know them a little bit. They still work so they can't come down as often as they would like, but they said every chance they get they will be here. They live in San Fernando Valley, California, so it isn't that far to travel to Bahia.
Played Mexican Train today and to my surprise I won the pot. I had the lowest score. The ladies can't wait for me to leave so maybe they can win a game or two. Heheheheh!!! Oh well.
We were invited to our Italian friends house across the bay for dinner. He is having a small dinner party and he made lasagna, sausage, turkey hot dogs, salad with the help of his wife Angela and she is the Bahia dessert queen as she made tiramisu. Very filling and delicious dinner. We stayed after everyone else left and had a great conversation. We didn't get home until 1:30am.
I am finishing up my craft projects. I made some Dammit Dolls to sell up north and in November in Bahia. I made Christmas tree ornaments for the grandsons and one ornament for Eian in memory of his graduation.

I wanted to deliver the ornaments myself instead of having to ask one of our friends to mail them for me.
I have packed up the craft items I am taking up to Washington to sell this summer and I cleaned up the art room. It looks good now. All that is left to do is vacuum the rug.
Dave called from town and asked me to pick him up as Sammy won't be done with the truck until later on this afternoon, so I drove our good truck to town and picked him up. We will head in around four and get the old truck and see what Sammy has to say.
We had a road runner on top of the carport roof the other day. This is the second time I have seen one up there. I got a few pictures. Awesome!!! The coyotes are starting to roam the beach in the morning and at night. We used to hear them a lot at night but only hear them once in a while now. Snakes have been spotted so everyone is alert when they go outside and on walks. We have never seen a snake at our house since we have been here and that is 7 years. But others have seen them around their houses.
I am still crocheting the granny square afghan for Tito and Brenda, our gate guards, for Christmas. They will be all by themselves again this summer. I think the last of our neighbors will be here until July then no Americans will be in the bay until September/October.
Dave took the old truck into town to the mechanic, Sammy. We want him to look at all the brake works to tell us what we will need to buy in the states. We had to leave the truck for the afternoon and come back around 4:30pm to give him a chance to look at it. He had a couple jobs in front of ours. Dave called me on the radio and I took our good truck to town to pick him up.
We drove back to town at 4:00pm and Sammy told us we need to replace the vacuum boost again as it doesn't work. He said he can take it out and then go to Ensendada to trade for another one. So nothing can be done on the old truck until we get back in October. Sammy said we could take the truck back home and he would come out on Tuesday or Wednesday to get the part out of the truck. So I drove the old truck home and Dave took our newer one.
Today is Brooke's birthday. She is Ernie's wife. I hope she had a nice and relaxing day.
I made my last trip into town with the old truck to buy a few groceries. Don't need much as we will be leaving in a week. I did take laundry in and will pick that up on Thursday. I will have to drive the newer truck to town to do that. The road is worse as we had a race a month ago and the ruts are deeper and it shakes and rattles the truck really bad. I wish they would at least grade the road but don't know if that is going to happen. Oh well.
We have been seeing a lot of young coyotes on the beach searching for food. They are a little skinny but look good and healthy. There is one that has a limp.
Looks like the geckos are coming back. Haven't seen any for such a long time and now within the last week or so I have seen 2. That is good as there is food for them. Lots of fly's.
My Mexican Bird of Paradise plant has tons of blooms on it. We have never seen it so full.

We finally got the one piece of plywood to finish the deck!!! Now we are waiting for a friend to come down from San Diego and stop at the Home Depot in Mexicali to buy the deck paint for us. It is more expensive from our little 'Home Depot' plus there isn't any more. Our friend, Christopher that is buying the paint for us was suppose to be here on Saturday but no show. So we figured he had to stay and work so he wouldn't be coming down. Well we got an email from him yesterday, Monday, and said he just left the Home Depot in Mexicali and would see us in a few hours. So now we have no excuses to finish the deck. Heheheh!
Christoper arrived at our house around 5:00pm and we visited with him for a while. We got the paint and wrote him a check for the cost. It definitely was cheaper than what we paid here in Bahia. After Christopher left we ate dinner and then sat on the deck in the cool breeze, (it was a hot day today), and had a glass of wine and a cigar. Very relaxing evening.
This morning we thought Sammy would be here at 7:00am so Dave got up about 6:30am but Sammy didn't show. He will probably be here tomorrow at 7:00am.
I washed clothes and helped Dave while he cut the piece of plywood for the top of the stairs. Once that was done I painted the sides and the top side and let it dry for a few hours. I cleaned the downstairs bathroom and swept the floor and the breezeway outside of the bathroom. The clothes were dry so I took them down. Dave and I had lunch and then it was back to work. He took the old piece of plywood off and we brought up the new. He is screwing it in place and then I will paint it again to put a second coat on it and cover up the screws. Tomorrow morning, Tito is coming over to put another coat of paint on the deck and it will be done. We will still have paint left over so when we return in the fall we will have Tito paint the stairs. It is a non-skid paint so it will be good to have it on the stairs. Plus it will protect the wood too. We are making progress. While Tito was painting our deck, his wife Brenda and their 2 adorable Chihuahuas sat on the top step and watched. I sat with her and had my morning coffee and played with the dogs. It didn't take Tito long before he was done.
While Tito was painting the deck, Sammy drove up and took out the bad part from the old truck. We told him and Tito it was alright if he wanted to come back, after he gets the new part, and put it in or he could wait until we get back. It was up to him. So we don't have to worry about anyone stealing the old truck as it wouldn't start anyway!!! Heheheh!!! Sammy left and we continued to get things ready for leaving. Dave stayed in the garage and I upstairs. Had to wait for the deck to dry which takes a couple hours.
Today, May 24th is Dave and my 26th wedding anniversary. Time flies when you are having fun! When Brenda went to visit her family in Nayarit, mainland Mexico, she brought back fresh shrimp for us. So that is what we had for our anniversary dinner. They wouldn't let her bring back the large shrimp so we had the little ones, but they were delicious!!!
Saturday, the 28th is our daughter-in-law's birthday. That is Jon's wife. So happy birthday Susannah!!!
Well the house is clean and our bags are packed and we will leave tomorrow, the 29th and head to San Felipe for the night. We asked Tito to paint the stairs with the rest of the paint we had from the deck so he will be doing that after we have left. It will look really nice when we get back. Tito will water the few plants I have and as always will keep checking the houses that are empty until we get back. We will miss his actual birthday which is the 31st, but I made a card and we put some pesos in it as we felt he can use that more than anything else.
We had a photo opportunity to get a picture of a road runner. We spotted him on the roof of the carport and so I got as many shots of him I could. Pretty awesome I think.

Tito came over at 8:00am before we left the house and got the final instructions on painting. He would take whatever paint is leftover back with him to his home. I'm sure he will be able to use it for something. Everything is locked up, turned off and away we go. We took highway 1 to Chapala then took that road, which is highway 5, all the way to San Felipe. They are still working on making a highway with bridges and such so it is a little slow going, but not bad. We had made reservations at a motel called 'Sky Blue' and there was one that was really small, and it didn't look right. Dave said it didn't look like it's picture. So we drove a little further up the road and came to the right one. The other one must have been the first Sky Blue motel. They had to clean our room so we only had to wait about 30 minutes. They have a pool so we hung out there. Then the room was ready. It was clean and had air conditioning and TV. Nothing in English, but we didn't have to watch TV. I read a little sitting by the pool. It was hot and I was going to go into the pool but soon after we arrived the families of the 2 ladies that were working at the motel, came and hung out and swam. So I decided to pass on the pool. We walked next door at a nice little restaurant and had dinner. It was very good. Then we went back to the room and just hung out. We had some pastry with us that we brought from Bahia so we had that and a cup of coffee in the morning and then headed for the border. It was already starting to get hot as the temperature in San Felipe was going to be 100 degrees. We left around 7:00am and didn't have any trouble getting to the border. There was a line due to it being the day after Memorial Day holiday, but the line moved slowly and then pretty soon we were crossing and all was well. Now we are in the USA and headed to our friends house, Phil and Creela who live in El Cajon, California. We will stay with them a couple days, then visit with another couple before heading north.
The last day of May was relaxing and we had a good visit with Phil and Creela. However, we will be back again in a day to stay and help Phil get his boat on the water to test drive it. We are planning to leave to head north on Sunday. So stay tuned as our adventure is just beginning.
