My Life

My photo
What a life I have lived since setting off into the sunset in August of 2008, with my husband, Dave, on our 46 foot Hunter Sailboat. We sailed to the Mainland side of Mexico; Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and many small anchorages in between. We saw unbelievable sea life and scenery. Our adventures took us to the Sea of Cortez for hurricane season in 2009 anchored off the fishing village of Bahia de los Angeles, in Baja California. We fell in love with the village and it's people and got to know a few of the Americans that enjoy living there in the winter. We knew we had found our paradise and looked for a place to live. We found a small house on the sandy beach at the south end of the bay and made it a permanent home. We ended our cruising life to become CLODs and eventually sold Wave Sweeper in May of 2016. Because of my back problems we were unable to make long passages so our cruising had come to an end. Now Wave Sweeper is in good hands with the new owners and they love her. We are living our life and dream as we want and the adventures will only get better.

An Uneventful Month

We arrived at Phil and Creela's without further incident. Saturday, the 1st, we did some running around but mostly relaxed and Creela and Phil showed off their garden and all the plants they have started from seed that still need to be planted. They will have a lot of different varieties of tomatoes that's for sure. They are hoping to come to Bahia for a while. Phil's nephew got all the insurance papers to cover the vehicles in Mexico and he is going to come down with them to help at their house in Bahia. That will be really nice to have them back as they have been gone for a couple years. Phil had his stroke and he is still struggling a little with speech and he has a limp but he has made a remarkable recovery. He will need help with getting his boat down to Bahia and doing things down there. So I hope it works out they can make the trip. We went to dinner with Phil and Creela at their favorite Italian restaurant to meet some friends which we know from Bahia. We had a great dinner and a fun time with Bill and Sandy. After dinner we said goodbye to Bill and Sandy and we said we would see Bill in Bahia in a few days. Sandy will stay in the states. Next morning we had a small breakfast and then headed out. It is Sunday and we are heading home. We will go back the way we came, crossing the boarder at Tecate. We said goodbye to Phil and Creela and thanked them for their hospitality. It is always nice to see them. We told them we hope to see them in Bahia soon. We had no problem crossing the boarder at Tecate and we headed toward Ensenada so we could catch highway, Mex 1 as we were going to spend the night at Jardine's in San Quintin. It was a nice drive and the weather was beautiful. We arrived mid afternoon at the hotel and were able to get a room. We did not make reservations so we were hoping since it was Sunday late they would have one. Their rooms are comfortable and clean. They now have heat as well as air conditioning in each room as before they had air conditioning and you had a standup heater in the room if you got cold. We got situated in our room then Dave took a walk through the gardens. It is such a peaceful and beautiful place. I tried to take a nap as I was really tired, but realized they don't supply a hair dryer so you can dry your hair, which means I had to take my shower earlier than I wanted so I could go outside in the sun to dry it. No worries. Actually it woke me up and I felt more alert. After talking with another couple in the courtyard, Dave and I went to the restaurant for margaritas and dinner. Always have great food there. After dinner I needed to walk off the dinner so I went for a walk while Dave went back to the room. It was really nice outside and the sun was just starting to go down. I returned to the room to relax for the night. Next morning we got up, had coffee and then headed home. I had some granola bars to munch for breakfast. We got home around 1:00pm and after unloading the car and putting things away, I made lunch. It appeared it got pretty windy while we were away so we asked our neighbor and he said it did. It blew all day and night one time to about 40 knots of wind. We found some things blown around in the yard but everything seemed to be alright. Most important thing is our birds (wood ones) didn't fly away!!!! Ha!! I know I am behind schedule in posting the blog but this month should be short. Nothing real exciting has happened. Well not like last month. While we were at Phil and Creela's place I made a call to Larry, who use to own our house in Bahia. He had told us he would be selling one of his quads. We figured he would sell his decease wife’s one. He had to go back to his house in San Diego to get some doctor appointments out of the way. I asked if he was still interested in selling one of the quads and he said yes. He told us how much he wanted for it and it was a reasonable price so I asked him not to sell it yet as we were heading back home and very interested. To my surprise he said he was heading back to Bahia himself the next day so I caught him just in time. He would be back in Bahia before us. When we get home we will take a look at it and decide from there. So the day after we arrived home we went over to see Larry and the quad. Dave looked it over and I just looked at it as I know nothing about them. We made a deal with Larry and wrote him a check. We will come back tomorrow to get it. Dave will have to ride it home as I need to learn. Fun! Fun! We now have Lois' quad in our possession. It is red and Lois' spirit lives on!!! Went to play Mexican Train at one of my friends house. Had a good time but I didn't win a lot. I figure if I can win one game I'm good!!! We play for quarters but they do add up. My thing is to win enough to keep playing. It is a quarter a game. When someone wins a game, a quarter gets put in a pot and the winner gets the rest. Then whomever scores the lowest score at the end of the game, wins the pot. It is a great way to play the game and chat with the gals and have fun. We were invited to our friends house over in Rincon, across the bay from us. They have returned from their home, Rome, and are here for the summer and fall. They can take the heat and humidity where the rest of us wither in the summer. They invited a few friends and we had a wonderful dinner. Paolo makes a great dinner and Angela makes wonderful desserts. After all the other guests left, Dave and I stayed on to visit with them. We drank Tequila and had espresso. We got home around 11 or so. Had a great night. Dave looked on line at the solar panel place where we are going to buy panels and discovered they were selling out of the panels Dave wants. It was going to be the last time they would offer that product. So we hurried up and ordered them and will have them shipped to our friends house in San Diego. We first had to ask them if that was alright and they needed to have them get to their house before May 1 as they were going on a European River Cruise. So after all was said and done, the panels were ordered and will arrive at our friends about a week before they have to leave. Then when we come back from vacation, we will stop and pick them up. That worked out great for everyone. Now all we need is to buy the material to make the frame and we will be set to put up new solar panels and have more power in the fall. We are making progress. I am back to going into town to get groceries and gas. Had to fill up the old trucks fuel tank and a couple jerry cans. Dave used the truck one day while I was at a train game, and it ran out of gas. It doesn't seem possible as it was filled not long ago. Well Dave figured that when I fill the fuel tank and if the flow is too fast it will burp and spurt gas out which to me meant it was full. Well not so. This time I went a little slower, stopping and slowing down and it seemed to take forever to fill it. But this time I can say it is a full tank. One of the gals that has a house north of us is selling her refrigerator and she asked if I was still interested. I told her yes. Well Dave and I talked about it and decided that if we get a replacement for the one we have it will be electric as we will have enough power for it. So I told her no and why. She has electricity where she lives so she will be switching out her propane refrigerator with a new electric one. I have been busy making the fabric fish and most of them are out of Seattle Sea Hawk and Sounder material. That is big in Washington. The football and Soccer teams of Seattle. I will be having a booth at a festival at the marina we used to live in, in September, so I will be selling some of my stuff. That should be fun. I have made 2 more signs and slowing down on crafts as we will be leaving next month so I will need to pack up soon. I was sitting on the deck one afternoon soaking my feet in water for a foot cleaning, and there was a bang then shaking. Both Dave and I said “earthquake”. It didn't last too long but down here you never know if that is a precursor to a bigger longer one. So we waited and nothing more happened. Thank goodness. There had been some horrendous winds north of us in La Gringa area and town. They had gusts up to 70 miles and hour. We kept waiting for big winds and the most we got was maybe 20. Thank goodness we didn't get those big winds here. We heard there was debris all over town and roof paper went flying. Wow!!! The weather is back to calm and the sun is continuing to shine each day with warm temps. The water is warming up and we have had porpoises swimming through schools of bate fish and there have been one huge fin back whale which came close to the shore in front of our house. I had been walking the beach when I kept hearing a whale blow sound. All of a sudden up comes this huge whale and all you see is his back and tail. It was awesome. After that is when he came close to the house. It is cool here in the spring to see all the wildlife. I hope one day we will be able to go on a whale tour here in Mexico to see and touch the whales. Everyone who has gone says it is a remarkable experience. Just to look in a whales eyes and touch them would be phenomenal. Dave bought a little row boat so when our other boat is tied on a buoy just off shore, he can row out to it. He went out in it this morning to test it for leaks. He took his fishing pole just in case he could catch a fish while out there. Well he came in with no leaks and no fish but he had a great row!!! Well I received instructions on how to start the quad, put it in neutral, reverse and forward. At first that was all I could handle. It definitely has get up and go when you just barely touch the throttle. Dave noticed that when the quad is sitting after it has been run, it leaks fuel. So he did some investigating and since the quad has been used a lot, it needed to have the carburetor cleaned. It took a while to get the mechanic to come look at it, but he finally did and took it to his house to work on it. He brought it back the next day. It hasn't leaked fuel since but we still turn the fuel switch off. After a few days of not riding it I decided to test my memory of what Dave taught me and started it, backed it up and took it for a little ride up the driveway and back. Dave took a video as the family wanted to see me ride it in hopes it would be a really funny video. Well they were disappointed!!!! Heheheh!! I was safe and watched carefully as I backed up from under the stairs of the house. I didn't hit anything or fall off!!! Ha!! I rode it to a friends house which is about 2 communities north of where we live and it wasn't a bad ride. It was a little bumpy on the main road but not too bad. All the gals were getting together to play a game of Mexican Train. I was pretty excited to ride it. I forgot to turn the fuel switch off and remembered it after starting to play Mexican Train, so when we broke for a break, I went outside and turned the switch. Now I could relax. When we were done playing, it was time to get on the quad and go. So here I am all excited to show everyone I could ride it so I backed up and started out. After passing a couple houses the quad died. Oh no!!!! I kept trying to start it and I was afraid I would flood it if I kept it up. Well just as I was getting frustrated and wondering what I was going to do, as I didn't have the hand held radio with me, one of the gals drove up behind me. I asked if anyone knew how to ride a quad and one of the gals got out and said she did. She got on my quad and tried to start it. A couple of times with no starting I suddenly saw what the problem was. I forgot to turn the fuel switch back on. Dave did that one day and he got as far a our community road just in front of the house before it died. Heheheh. Well I felt stupid but what could I do. At least I found the problem. I thanked Susan and gave her a hug and we both, plus the car full of ladies laughed!!!! We don't take things too serious here and we all help one another. So with me being able to start the quad, I did so and off I went. I wasn't driving it too smoothly as the road was bumpy and I was going a little slower this time than when I can, so I pulled over and let my friends pass me in the car. I waved and then started out behind them. They left me in the dust you might say!!!!! The washboard was so bad going home, I had a rough time steering. I went as slow as I could and it was rough. Everyone says you need to go really fast so you can ride above the washboards, but I didn't feel comfortable doing that as I am not use to the quad yet. So I tried to find a section of the road that was a little better and once turning off of the main road I was on the smooth road to our community. I am going to have to practice more as I am a little jerky with the throttle. When you hit a bump your thumb pushes on the throttle. So in time I will be whizzing around the neighborhood. I was proud of myself though that I rode it on the road. The next day, however, my back was sore so I will need to curtail riding on the main road until it gets graded. It won't be paved any time soon, or if ever, but there is a rumor going around that the road will be graded soon. I certainly hope so as everyone has complained about it. It shakes the dickens out of our vehicles and that isn't a good thing. We got word today that a shipment of plywood came in at our little 'home depot' so Dave took the old truck into town to check it out. It is really hard to get good ¾ plywood for outside. We have been waiting a long time so hopefully they ordered the right stuff. Well Dave came home without the plywood. He said one side was smooth like a laminate and the other was like the regular texture of plywood. Dave isn't sure we can use it. So he came home to talk to me and also some of our neighbors about it. We wouldn't need to treat the smooth side of the wood as that has already been done, but we would have to treat the other side and edges. The smooth side would go face down and the other side would face up and have to have a sealant put on it then it could be painted. Dave went next door to talk to our neighbor George and he recommended we don't get it. It won't last long. Then Dave went and talked to another friend and they recommended the same thing. Don't buy it. So Dave will have to go back in to town tomorrow and tell them we can't use it. It is not what we ordered. So we will just see what they have to say. I don't know why it is so hard to get outdoor plywood!!! We were hoping to have the deck done before we headed north for the summer, but at this rate it doesn't look like that is going to happen. Oh well. I walked on the beach this morning while the tide was out. I didn't think I would be able to because the wind had been blowing pretty good and switching directions. But soon after 9:00am I decided I would give it a go and it was a great walk. Thank goodness there was a little breeze as it would have been hot otherwise. When I got back to the house I checked my pace counter and I had walked 3 miles with 8,000 and some steps. My goal is to get to 10,000. When I got home I made some Gatorade to drink and sat on the deck to cool down. The water is a Caribbean green and it is so pretty today. The wind has stopped and the bobo's are flying all around me so I took a couple pictures and went inside. We do live in a beautiful place. Very tranquil!!! After dinner last night after the sun went behind the mountains, I took a short walk on the beach. I found a dead puffer fish. I have always noticed them dried and hanging in the shops in Ensenada and various places we have been and I thought it would be cool to have one. So I found a stick and poked it between the two bones that form the mouth and brought it home and rinsed it off and set it aside to dry. I told Dave what I got and he said he saw it the other day when he was on the beach. I told him what I wanted to do and he thought it was strange. I got to thinking about it and agreed, as it would take so long for it to dry and not stink so I took pictures instead and put it back on the beach. It was an awesome find for me though. After walking 10,000 steps yesterday I was inspired to try and make the walk to the big estuary. It was breezy but with the tide out it should be a good walk. Well I have returned and I did it. It is quite a walk and when I was walking back to the house the wind had picked up a little but it was still good. I walked over 11,000 steps just doing that so I made my goal not only in steps but to the estuary. I have been having problems again with my sciatica and the walking helps. Plus it keeps me in shape. I don't know if I will walk 10,000 steps every day but at least I am on a roll. I took some pictures to share. I was surprised to find a duck swimming around. Dave visited a friend over in Rincon to ask about the plywood, since he is building a house. When he came home he said it would be o.k. To buy the plywood as long as we seal it on all sides. So he had lunch and then went to our 'home depot' to pick up 10 sheets of the plywood and pay for it. He took our gate guard with him to help. So tomorrow will be the start of getting the wood prepped and then Tito and him will start disassembling the deck to get ready for the new boards. It will be so nice when that is done and we are so glad we could get it done before we head north.
