My Life

My photo
What a life I have lived since setting off into the sunset in August of 2008, with my husband, Dave, on our 46 foot Hunter Sailboat. We sailed to the Mainland side of Mexico; Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and many small anchorages in between. We saw unbelievable sea life and scenery. Our adventures took us to the Sea of Cortez for hurricane season in 2009 anchored off the fishing village of Bahia de los Angeles, in Baja California. We fell in love with the village and it's people and got to know a few of the Americans that enjoy living there in the winter. We knew we had found our paradise and looked for a place to live. We found a small house on the sandy beach at the south end of the bay and made it a permanent home. We ended our cruising life to become CLODs and eventually sold Wave Sweeper in May of 2016. Because of my back problems we were unable to make long passages so our cruising had come to an end. Now Wave Sweeper is in good hands with the new owners and they love her. We are living our life and dream as we want and the adventures will only get better.

Enjoying Life

So far May has been wonderful weather. It has been in the upper 80's with sea breezes which keeps us cool. It has been nice to sit outside on the deck in the shade and read my book in the afternoons with the breeze which keeps the bobo's away. But look out when the wind diminishes as they are all over the place and you!! I guess that is what we have to put up with living in the desert.

Our garage is finally completed.  It is now painted to match the other buildings on our lot and the windows are in.  This was a huge project but so happy we have it.

We have found snake trails on our road to the house but not close to the house. We don't have bird feeders or a lot of wood stacked up and we have gravel around the house which they don't like. We have heard of other people discovering snakes, but we have been pretty lucky. This is the time of year I don't go hiking in the desert because of the warm weather and I know snakes are out there. Since I hurt my back I haven't been doing really long walks but at least I can walk about 3 miles. I love walking on the beach and if I am lucky, will find sea glass or other interesting things. Right now with the high tides the beach is pretty clean.

Our little neighborhood is almost full of people. There are 8 houses and a fifth wheel here, and 3 empty houses. We have 5 families that come down at various times. Some can only stay a couple weeks while others can stay longer. Usually at this time of year we have a fuller homestead and then by end of June most if not all of us go north for the summer. It doesn't look as though this summer is going to be hot, hot, because our spring has been rather cool compared to last year. I couldn't walk the beach last year at this time until late in the afternoon. Almost everyday I have walked the beach so it is a pleasure!

We started out the month going to Ensenada. We had planned on going up at this time to meet up with our friends from Washington State, but they had to cancel there trip to Bahia. So we decided to go anyway as we needed a few things from Costco, Walmart and the Bank. We stayed a couple days so we had plenty of time to shop and headed home on a Friday. There wasn't much traffic which was nice.

Today the 5th is our grandson Eian's 19th birthday. He is in the Army stationed in New York area. We have people here who throw a Cinco de Mayo party every year and we always get invited. They have corn hole and bocce ball games and Dave and I like to play the Corn hole game. Our sons play that up north and it is really a big thing up there. Dave won a prize last year but not this time. I didn't win last year or this but it is just fun to play. Lots of good food and it is nice to get together with everyone who has come down for the spring.

Our son Mykel turned 46 today, the 9th. A lot of birthdays this month. It use to be March was the birthday month but when my boys got married both of their wives have birthdays this month and a week apart!!

On the 10th we were invited to a benefit dinner across the bay in Rincon. The dinner is to help a Mexican family that has severe autism and he needs lots of medicine and doctor visits. So a lady that lives in Rincon put this dinner together. There was a nice turnout and the family was very happy for the financial help. What was really special was it was Mexican Mother's Day!!! Their little boy is such a cutie!!! We have a grandson who is autistic so we have some idea of the cost involved and the many doctor appointments. We were happy to help. This family put the dinner on and all we had to do was donate some pecos!!! It was a delicious meal and we got to meet a couple new people at this gathering.

We are thrilled that the propane truck is coming out the last Wednesday of each month!!! There for a long time we didn't know if or when they would come. They come from Guerrero Negro which is another state and 2-1/2 hours away. They usually come into town and fill up the locals, stay overnight and come out our way the next day. The best news is they are filling not only stationery tanks but our non stationery ones too!!!What a blessing that is to not have to take the tanks into town to have them filled. It does save us some money!

Our friend, Paolo, from Rome, Italy, is back for the spring and summer. Unfortunately his wife, Angela, had to stay behind to take care of her mother. Angela lost her dad recently and her mother is very distraught so she is staying with her for a couple months and then will join Paolo here in Bahia at the end of June. We may not get to see her until we come back from vacation as we are planning on leaving around that time frame. So we shall see. They are both very friendly and nice people!!! We are good friends. Paolo bought a small truck from our neighbor last year and he had only driven it 3 times to town and it has been sitting at his house. So during a conversation, he mentioned he was going to sell it as he doesn't have need for it any more. So our ears perked up and we asked how much he was selling it for and he said for what he paid. We have the old beater truck that came with the house and it is really getting to the point we can't trust it going back and forth to town any more. We just put different tires on it as the other ones were worn, and we still need to put air in one back tire before we go anywhere. This truck has no working instrumentation, is rusted enough where no heavy load can be hauled in the bed any more. Every third trip to town requires a fill up and we need to keep an eye on the automatic transmission fluid and brake fluid. The truck is a 1977 Silverado, Chevy. It was a nice truck in the beginning but it had been left out in the hot sun and weather for years and it just wasn't maintained. It has been a good truck for us though. Our Bahia truck had a longer life than we thought it would but now it is getting to the point we really need to get one that will get us back and forth to town without having to worry whether it will get us there or not. We told Paolo we wanted to buy the truck. We were going to pick it up the night we went over to his house for dinner, but because we were coming home in the dark and not familiar with the truck we decided to get it later. It is a Ford 150 4 speed, 1991 and has been kept in Bahia. At least the gas, temperature and speedometer gauges work and the brakes are good and so are the tires. We went back over to Paolo's a couple days later and got the truck. Dave drove it home while I was behind him in our Toyota truck. So now we are selling our old beater truck. There are a couple Mexican people we are friends with that need a truck so we talked to them. We explained to them about how the truck didn't have any working gauges and etc, etc. We wanted them to know it was a truck to drive in town with, not on the bumpy road from town to where we are or further. So with all the negative information they still wanted it. So in the end, our gate guard's dad bought it. He was such a happy camper. That truck is good for launching boats and the engine is still going strong, which is the only thing on the truck that is. And you can haul rocks and sand in it but not a huge water container. So they paid us and they were happy and we are too. We now have a good truck that should last us a long time. We are the 4th owner. It is fun driving a stick again and it doesn't bounce around like the big truck did. It is a baja truck as it rattles on the rough road, but it works. We are going to buy spark plugs and some other things while in the states and come back and give the truck a tune up and change the air filter and all that kind of stuff. Keep it in good shape!!! So our prayers have been answered!!

My friend, Mary Ann invited Dave and I over for dinner along with another couple we are good fiends with. It was nice. Mary Ann is a widower and has lived here in Bahia for years and years. This is her only home.

Happy Anniversary for Dave and I. 27 years!!! Wow! It just doesn't seem that long. I am looking forward to our future years together.

Our Daughter-in-law, Brooke turned 40 today, the 21st. Ernie, my son, threw her a great party!!!

Our gate guard, Tito has a birthday on the 31st, but because some of our neighbors won't be here to celebrate his actual birthday, we had a party for him on the 26th. The neighborhood gathered and had appetizers and a cake for him. We all gave gifts too. Since we are going to be here for his birthday we are having him and his wife over for dinner, then after dinner invite those neighbors who are still here over for cake. Tito and Brenda have had us over to their house a few times for dinner and camp fires so we figured this was a good time to reciprocate.

Our other daughter-in-law, Susannah turned 41 today the 28th. Boy these guys are sure getting old!! Ha!

Today, the last day of the month, we had Tito and his wife, Brenda over for dinner to celebrate his actual birthday. Then we had our neighbors come over after dinner and have cake with him. He looked happy.

Here are the ornaments I made for next years' show and new items.
